Benefits of student membership

I've been a student member of the Institute of Professional Editors' South Australian branch, Editors SA, for a year, and I have to say that the most valuable benefit of the student membership is attending the meetings and workshops. These meetings and workshops provide professional development opportunities that have helped me be more efficient in the way I use word processing programs, and anticipate and plan for problems that hadn't occurred to me before. I enjoy the range of these workshops too; in fact, it was the fiction editing workshop offered last April that pushed me to join the organisation, as I have a personal interest in fiction writing and editing. From advanced Microsoft Word training to dealing with legal and ethical issues encountered by editors, I find that there is something worth learning at every workshop. The fact that students can become members at a discounted price is the cherry on the cake.

The networking aspect of being part of Editors SA is also great - that is, once I successfully battled my nerves and attended an event. Right from the start, I felt welcomed. Editors SA emphasises inclusiveness and the members are as diverse as it can get. I've met people who have worked in the editing field for decades and also those who want to break into the field. It's been wonderful getting to know and be part of a group of people who are passionate about grammar, punctuation and all the other idiosyncrasies of the English language.

As a student member, I'm always on the lookout for internships or work experience opportunities. Since Editors SA is a branch of IPEd (Institute of Professional Editors), I receive job alerts and notices of internship openings or mentoring programs from IPEd, which has opened up more avenues of possibilities for me.

If you've been thinking about joining Editors SA but have been on the fence, I'd encourage you to join. I've learnt so much since joining as a student member and I couldn't have done it without the wonderful people I've met.
