Next meeting: Book club–editors as readers

Bring a book, bring a plate and bring some discussion!  Last year it was a huge success so we have decided to do it again.  Come along and share your thoughts about a book you have read, or just come and listen if you wish.

Please note the earlier than usual starting time: we'll have a shared light meal (hence the bring a plate request) beforehand, and then start the meeting proper as usual at 7.30.

Michael Vnuk, AE, started his working life as a geologist, but has always been fascinated with words. Although he'd dabbled in Scrabble over the years, it wasn't until the 1990s that he got serious and began playing in Scrabble tournaments. This led to his running a Scrabble club, organising and directing tournaments, serving on committees, and editing 'Across the board', the quarterly Australian Scrabble newsletter. Michael enjoyed the voluntary editing and went on to complete a TAFE editing diploma. He's been a freelance editor since 2007, working mainly on science-related materials.

Michael will talk about the game, especially how tournament Scrabble differs from kitchen-table Scrabble. He will also discuss the official word list for tournaments, which completely removes any arguments about words during games. And he'll finish with some thoughts on editing based on his newsletter experiences.
