Editors South Australia (Editors SA) is the lead organisation for editors and editing in South Australia

Editors South Australia is a professional association that supports practising editors and promotes the highest standards of editing. Editors SA provides regular opportunities for its members to meet one another, develop their editing (and related) skills and keep up to date with new technologies. Professional accreditation is strongly advocated through IPEd (Institute of Professional Editors) as a way of setting an objective benchmark of standards. IPEd’s Editors Directory links editors to potential employers or clients.

Members Helping Members workshops (Saturday 26 May 2018): bookings now open

Are you a beginning editor? Or perhaps a more experienced editor wanting to brush up on some core knowledge and skills? If so, read on! Editors SA will run four intensive workshops held over one day.

Punctuation (presented by Michael Vnuk)
Punctuation is not as straightforward as some people think. There are the ‘rules’, but editors should understand when they can and perhaps should be varied. This workshop will cover:

  • a general overview of punctuation
  • a quick run-through of many of the punctuation marks, with thoughts on different industry practices and personal preferences
  • examples, exercises and discussion.

Using Styles in Word (presented by Marianne Hammat)
Styles are invaluable in a wide range of texts particularly when working in large documents, such as academic theses.

  • What are styles?
  • Why do you need them?
  • How do you use them effectively?

Proofreading (presented by Leanne Barrie)
This workshop covers the elements of proofreading, both in hard copy and electronically. You’ll go through a task from start to finish, including understanding your brief, how to proofread efficiently and accurately, and how to use various resources and methods to ensure quality work.

Grammar (presented by Birgitt Olsen)
In this workshop, you’ll briefly recap some basic grammar concepts but then head into the territory in which live the lesser known but significant features of grammar, relevant to editors today. You’ll also hear about why they matter to some and not to others. Because grammatical standards vary a fair bit these days, we’ll also look at tailoring grammar for your publication or audience.

More information about each workshop (including preparation and resources) can be found on the event booking pages.

Date: Saturday 26 May 2018

Time: 9.00 am to 4.30 pm (NOTE: day comprises four sessions of 1.5 hours duration)

Venue: Intersect, 167 Flinders St, Adelaide

Cost (for each session): Members $30; Distance members $45; Non-members $20
NOTE: If members enrol for all four workshops there is a $20 discount (i.e. total cost is $60 for distance members and $100 for other members). Beginning editors joining as associate members will qualify for the discount.
